I get it. It's hard to try out an author you've never read.
If you’re wondering whether Riders of Jade & Fire is the next fantasy series you’ll love, here’s some insight--and not from me, but from readers who’ve enjoyed the world I’ve created.
This is a list of books that readers say are similar to my Riders of Jade & Fire series: dragon-filled adventures and fantasy worlds, with strong heroines and high-stakes political drama. Unsurprisingly, many of them are my favourite fantasy reads of all time.
So, if you’ve enjoyed any of the following books, I think you’ll love Riders of Jade & Fire:
1. Eragon by Christopher Paolini
Eragon was inspirational for me, and the bond between Saphira and Eragon is one of my favorites. Riders of Jade & Fire explores the powerful bond between dragonriders and their dragons in a world where their actions could change the course of an empire.
2. His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik
I really enjoyed Novik’s Temeraire, and the unique blend of historical fiction with fantasy. Two of my favourite genres! There's political intrigue, warfare, sacrifice, and deeply emotional dragon bonds that I tried to bring to my series as well.
3. To Shape a Dragon's Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose
I admit I haven't yet read this but desperately want to after readers told me it felt like a good comparable to "Dragon Class". This book blends dragons with indigenous cultural elements and strong female protagonists. I have heard nothing but excellent things about this book.
4. The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
Another one I have yet to read! Although The Lunar Chronicles is set in a futuristic world, it has rebellion, romance, and political intrigue. Like Jin in Riders of Jade & Fire, Meyer’s heroine is a low born girl with a mysterious past.
5. Season of the Dragon by Natalie Wright
If you enjoy a richly imagined world filled with magic, dragon-riding warriors, and chosen one vibes, Season of the Dragon will hit all the right notes. This story is packed with rich lore, action, and a fierce female lead.
6. Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
No doubt you've heard of this one! For readers who crave military fantasy and intense dragon-riding action, Fourth Wing offers that same high-octane blend of character growth and epic battles. Many readers have said Dragon Class is like a clean, YA version of Fourth Wing.
7. Pack Dragon by Ava Richardson
Full disclosure, this book is also still on my TBR (yeah, it's a big pile)! But Goodreads readers who have enjoyed it have also loved my series. If you’re drawn to dragon-riding fantasy with fierce action and a focus on strong female protagonists, Pack Dragon is likely right up your alley.
8. Ash Princess by Laura Sebastian
Ash Princess is a gripping story of a heroine caught in the middle of political intrigue, betrayal, and a world that threatens to break her. Much like the journey of Jin, my protagonist, this book explores themes of rebellion, destiny, and the fight to reclaim power from oppressive forces. It also touches on racism, fascism, and what it means to be an ally.
9. Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey
McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern is undoubtedly the ultimate classic in dragon fantasy. If you love dragons, Dragonriders of Pern undoubtedly has a very special spot on your bookshelf. Several readers have said they are reminded of this series, with powerful dragons and deep bonds between dragons and riders.
10. Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
While Hunger Games is set in a dystopian world (and has no dragons!), it carries themes of rebellion, political maneuvering, and the inner strength of characters fighting against an oppressive empire.
If you enjoy stories that combine dragons, adventure, political intrigue, no doubt you would have already read many (if not all!) of these. Some are heavier on romance than others (I treat mine like a side dish), but whether they feature the bond between dragonriders, rebellion against oppression, found family and mysterious pasts, or the journeys of powerful heroines, these stories are all titans in the genre.
Happy reading! And if there's a book you think should be on this list, let me know!
